Social Issue Project Proposal

- I plan to do my project on abortion
- My friend always told me, "What if one of the babies who were aborted had the cure for cancer?" This statement has been in my mind for a few years wondering the same thing.
- People should be concerned because people are killing babies that haven't even had the chance to live on their own.
- They can be shown pictures of little kids enjoying their lives to make people feel guilty.

-National Right to Life, Naf (National Abortion Federation), Naral Pro-Choice America

     -Abortion is Murder
-Fetuses feel pain during the abortion procedure
     -Abortions cause psychological damage
-Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology study of men whose partners had abortions found that 51.6% of the men reported regret, 45.2% felt sadness, and 25.8% experienced depression
-Abortions reduce the number of adoptable babies

Social Issue Ad Campaign Examples

this is taken conceptually. I like this advertisement because it brings up a strong emotion of the viewer because humans are the reason why these animals are dying sooner. it is clever to put the animals on plastic bags because that is how they are dying.
This ad is creative. even though the it is a baby, it is very stereotypical because thats how some people treat certain people based on their skin color. its different how its a baby because they have their whole life to decide what they want to become.
This photo is technical because it takes timing. again, there is a lot of emotion because the first photo is sad. But it shoes how just having a different owner can be good as long as he isnt abusive. the 2nd photo you can see that the cat is a very pretty cat with its eyes wide open instead of barely open like the left one.

Photojournalism - Before the Night, with their Might, the Children FIght

Sweat in the palms of their hands, smiles on their faces, all of them friends preparing to battle one another. With their hearts racing, eager to begin, young martial art students have been training to fight or spar against each other to win a trophy.
Every month, there is an in-school sparring tournament at the West Shore Academy of Martial Arts. Children compete with each other because it helps build confidence in them.
The tournament starts with a traditional bow in which shows respect for the American and Korean flags and the instructor teaching the class. Student will then put on all their equipment including gloves, footgear, headgear, mouthpiece, and for the boys, cups. Every student has to fight at least three matches trying to score as many points as possible.
At the West Shore Academy of Martial Arts, kids are doing a traditional bow in to begin their  sparring tournament.

Master Vergara lines up the students so they are organized in three different size groups: Lightweight, Middleweight, and Heavyweight. he does this so the tournament will be more fair for the short kids versus the taller ones. Because there are three divisions, that also means three winners, and the winner of the tournament wins a trophy.
To secure the trophy, the competitors fight to achieve victory by scoring more points than their competitors.

Kicking at his opponent, Ridley Sherman (5) laughs throughout his match against Andrew Hockenberry (11).

In the picture above, young Ridley is fighting his heart out, trying his best to get all three points. He is a five year old who is very interested in martial arts. According to Heather Sherman (Ridley's mother), he has been training for 13 months. At home, he also practices with his younger brother Jasper (2). Heather says, "He and Ridley practice together all the time" in reference to Jasper. After every class Jasper watches, he shakes Master Vergara's hand as if he were his student. Ridley improves each week, and his fighting shows it.

There were thirteen kids, at least twenty-one matches occurred that night. While the children waited to be put up against one another, they watched other matches.

In complete focus, Cierra Hower (9) watches her competitors to learn how they fight and defend.

After all the fighting, the scores are being tallied up to find out who won in each division. While the scores are being added up, the students do continuous fighting against each person to test their skill levels against different weight groups and different skill levels.
Master Vergara gives Pablo (9) and Cleo Yatsko (7) tips and advice on how to fight with more precision to help them fight better.

After the scores were added up, everybody focusing on the tournament (meaning kids and their parents), were ready to hear the winners of this tournament. While the children knee down on the ground, they are listening very carefully. The winners were announced. In the light weight division, Cleo Yatsko (7) won. In the middle weight, the winner was Josh Peterson (10), and in the heavy weight Alexa Rameirez (12) was the winner.
Josh Peterson (10) is ecstatic about being the middle weight champion!

Processing the News

the article is about photojournalism and how it brings out the truth in the world. David Campbell is a secretary for the World Press Photo Contest. During 2013, the contest winner of 2012 was accused of manipulation the photo and there was a lot of controversy. Material alterations is not acceptable. Contreras was a talented photographer who was operating under extreme duress. the attitude to many pf the photographers was everything is okay as long as the camera took. and it is not okay if it is in Photoshop. when the viewers of the photo cannot truth the photos, the photographers become tricksters. there is distrust among many known photographers. photographers will edit their photos to show what they saw in real life. manipulating a photo vs underlying content.

Photojournalism Shooting Assignment

It was cool doing this assignment. I liked how I know each one of the students who were fighting. Watching them Fight and talking to them was hard though. since they are young, almost every time i asked a question, they would respond with a 1 word answer, so i had to ask them for a longer response or i asked another question. For the younger younger kids, i just went straight to the parent/parents and asked them some questions. overall i liked the experience, it was fun, but tough.

"The Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra scores a romance between the city and its residents"
by Kari Larsen

the author says how she came back from the west coast and realizes how much she missed Harrisburg. there was a November concert focusing on "Star-Cross'd Lovers". it is 2 works based on Shakespeare. By arranging the concert, the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra or HSO was led by Stuart Malina, a Tony winning conductor.  "West Side Story" was criticized for bringing the issues plaguing the streets of New York. but the sound of it in the orchestra recognizes what is at stake in the city. and love. This piece serves as a powerful remembrance.

i like how the main main photo has variety in it. but not too much color. it is neutral because orchestra instruments are brown and people are wearing all black. i like how it is in focus. the only thing i dont like is that the conductor is a little blurry because of the movement in his arm.

Robin Bowman – It’s Complicated: The American Teenager

She was a photographer concerned about human condition in crisis and aftermaths. She's been around the world taking photos. And she was published different.

All these photos are different because they are all posed. Another reason it is different is because it is in black and white and displays a sad emotion.

This photo makes me feel sad. even though the photo has a cute baby and should be happy and lively for the new life, it is very down and makes it seem having a baby is a terrible thing because he is sad and the girl in the back is looking down. this photo is posed. and a lot of times, photos are not posed and more recent photos tend to be in color.

I like this photo because she is in focus, but i don't like it because it shows terrible things. i hate how she is smoking when she has a puppy in her hand. the puppy is cute but she can do serious damage to her and the puppy. she seems a little young to smoke anyways. Bowman posed her and the edge seems to be framed also.

This photo is of a nineteen year old who works at a coal place. i like how it displays what he does. i don't like how he is sad. no teenager should ever be in his position. it makes me feel bad. She took this photo with a great background that shows where he works, but also what he wears . again it is black and white.

Photojournalism Project Proposal

I am going to take photos of kids sparring. Every month there is an in school karate tournament for the kids to compete with one another. I am going to take photos because it reminds me when i was younger. I used to also compete from age 5 to 11 so it would be cool to show my students the photos of them.

Portraiture

 Artsy
 Color
Black&White

This is my model, her name is Rina and she is my cousin. She is a sporty athletic person who likes dressing casual nice. She is outgoing and overall happy. I showcased her personality because she was chillaxing and i was like "smile" so i got her while she was doing some things. she is a quiet person a lot of times so i got some shots with her looking away. but with the right people she is open like the ones in the grass. she is at the same time a serious person who always has to do the right things and get things done perfectly so i had to explain her certain positions i wanted her to be in.

I really enjoyed this assignment. i liked how it made my photos look like i actually have skill. It was cool to realize how the pros will take their photos. having Elaine come in to show us some of her examples was a cool experience because i was able to adapt what she taught to what i can do. i liked how photoshop has actions. i never used them so i liked seeing the different effects and how it can change the photos. i loved the end results. I thought it was weird looking at the photos without edit and comparing it to the photo after editing it. but the end results were phenomenal i think.

My model liked it, and other people thought it was good also. some tips is to take photos on different days and use different outfits and locations. the most annoying part for me was finding a good time to take photos because it seemed to always be too late so we used indoors as a last resort. what i did well was telling her what to do and she listened which was really helpful.

Portraiture Shooting Assignment

I liked this assignment because it made me think more than usual. I needed my subject to be "herself" so that she was comfortable yet at the same time looked nice for the photos i took of her. It was fun to do because she wanted her picture taken and i had quite a few pictures of her from when at karate because she just took class and right before. I used 3 different days to take them. the first day was at my house in my front yard, the second day was at the karate school, and the third day was at a park during a fall festival. Her hair was so big and poofy it was hard to control it though. i liked her sense of style, but the sun was like No to every picture i took. i would take a photo and the sun was like "OH Not in my House!" but overall it went well.

Portraiture Workbook Assignments

1
It’s cool how most photos are traditional, but this photographer took it to a whole new level. I like how they used their disadvantages to their advantage.  When it is windy, it is hard to get the hair perfect, but in the first photo, it is a pretty messy.  Senior portraits tend to be serious and smiling, but the photographer’s use of props are so different it gives an interesting new look to the photo. Some photos would’ve looked nice before, but he made them have a dirty texture look which I think looks cool. Having the subject completely in it, or the face in it is a common thing, but taking it beyond the limits and making only half their face in a photo has a different appeal. Most people have themselves in the photo, not normally 5 times, making their portrait a chrono shot gives off a different feel on the person because you can see their many different personalities.

i like how this photo could be anywhere because the flowers are nicely in the background but it is blurred so you cant tell about anywhere else.
Smile

i like how this photo is framing her and the location is simple just in a field.
Smile

this photo is unique because most people are just laying on the ground, but the sun in the background wis really pretty and her smile is nice.
Smile

i like how the candid shot is different, and the photo on the right has a little prop using the hat to help pose her for both shots.
Candid and Smile

i like how simple this photo is. its just a close up, but i like how her eyes really pop out.
Smile

i like the angle of the photo with the sun in the back because it makes her have a glow around her.
Smile

i like this location and the artsy type of feel in this photo. it not being colored makes it have a very serious and mysterious feel to the photo.
Artsy and Serious

i like how this photo is artsy again, and it is in black and white. i like how her black shirt contrasts the white flower because it makes you eyes move a little bit.
Artsy and Serious

i like the perspective of this photo. it is unusual to have the white at the top though, but it gives a different look to it. i also love the use of the prop.
Perspective and Smile and Prop

i like how this photo uses a ton of emphasis because everything is greenish yellow, but her hair sticks our well, and herself as a whole.
